About Nakina CALL

The Nakina Centre for Aboriginal Living and Learning (CALL) began in 1997. Some years, we’re on the river longer than others, and in 1999 and 2000, we were downriver from April to September (6 months each year). We now welcome Indigenous children and adults to join us.

This initiative was and is our dream. Bryan Jack, Watsait, Wolf Clan Member of the Taku River Tlingit First Nation and I, Joan Jack, as his wife, always dreamed of creating and holding space where Indigenous peoples and our friends could be to simply “live and learn” as the Indigenous way is a process of “being and becoming” where one does not focus on getting from points A to B.

Instead, our way of life is based on the understanding that it is the journey, not the destination, that holds wisdom from which we can learn. These two different worldviews result in systemic discrimination where we as Indigenous peoples are not supported unless the “outcomes” of what we do are measurable within the A to B model.

The Nakina CALL is an opportunity to work with us as Indigenous peoples to support us in doing what we know we need. We are doing and have always done this work for those that feel “called” to “be and become” with us in the context of our culture.
